HOW IT WORKS

Residencies can be between 2-7 days (with possibility for longer). You will get your own bedroom next to a shared guest bathroom. There may be one other resident at the same time. Residencies are largely self directed with Shoog available for feedback, studio visits and possible collaboration. Food is not provided, but you have full kitchen access to prepare your own meals. Your day is structured however you want it while respecting the quiet hours between 10am-10pm. Check in with other residents and Shoog about sharing meals, collaborating, or going to the Springs and nearby nature.

There are plenty of opportunities to make site-specific art for Hazey if desired, but this is not expected and you have full control over what you are working on during your time here.

We are working with a very loose definition of “residency” and it does not have to be production-oriented. If what you need is to come here and rest and be outside for five days without creating anything, we are here for that too. Work as much or as little as you want. Arrive and fully abandon all your previous plans and make an entirely different project than you expected! You get to make what you want without parameters from us.

We have a bunch of kid neighbors who are part of Hazey. If you choose, you are very welcomed to come with some sort of enrichment activity to share with the kids (aged 4-9), which could be art, sports, swimming or any other project you can think of.

If you have interest in coming for a residency, please fill out this form and we will get back to you within two weeks to let you know. Requests are taken on a rolling basis and dates can be set up to 6 months in advance.

COST

Prices are on a sliding scale. We’ve calculated that it costs about $40/night to host someone. If you are able to pay higher than that, it will allow us to invest and grow the space as well as offer lower and no-cost visits to some residents.

One bedroom (up to 2 guests): $30-100/night

For the entire guest area (2 rooms + 1 bath, max 4 guests): $60-200/night

Please note: We have a No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds Policy and can work with you to set up a no-cost or work-trade visit if needed. We are excited to have you and will absolutely work with you to make it happen.

If you would like some guidance on deciding how much to pay on the sliding scale, we recommend this resource made by Hadassa Damien of Ride Free Fearless Money (scroll down a bit to get to the guide)

We require a $30 deposit to secure your spot. Full payment is not due until the end of your stay. After receiving confirmation, you can Pay here (We can also accept cash, cashapp, and venmo)

GETTING HERE

We are located in the Itchetuknee Highlands area (Fort White, FL), exact address will be provided upon visit confirmation

-The closest airport or bust stop is Gainesville (45 mins) but Jacksonville (1.5 hours) and Orlando (2.5 hours) offer more flights

-Shoog is occasionally available to offer pickups from Jacksonville ($50) or Gainesville ($30) with advanced request

-It is highly recommended to have a car for your visit. This is a country area without public transit or easy ability to walk places.

INTERACTION WITH SHOOG

-General quiet hours are 10pm-10am

-Shoog is the only person who lives at Hazey full time and will likely be there during your stay

-Shoog is a friendly social guy who often loves to hang out. They also host a lot of people, are disabled, and sometimes need alone time and low-stim hours to get work done. Shoog’s bedroom door will be closed if they are not available for interaction. During quiet hours or closed-door times, please exit and enter the house through the BACK DOOR and try to limit use of the common space. If you need to be in common space, please move quietly and hold off on cooking big meals, watching tv, or talking loudly.

-Feel free to spread out and explore any of the land at any time!

-Feel free to invite Shoog on any of your adventures or meals. If they have time and energy, they will most likely tag along!

-Shoog is happy to share recommendations or suggestions for places to visit

-Also, Shoog is available to be hired for photo shoots, including underwater shoots at the springs. More info about booking is here

SURROUNDING AREA

-Ichetucknee Springs State Park - Shoog moved to this property specifically because of its proximity to Ichetuknee which is a quick 10 minute country drive away. There is swimming, kayaking and tubing. More info: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ichetucknee-springs-state-park

-Within an hour, there are also many other freshwater springs to visit (Poe, Gilchrist Blue, Rum Island, Royal, Salt, Silver Glenn, Little River, Troy, Rainbow, Fanning, Manatee), parks and trails (Oleno, Paynes Prairie, Sweetwater, Ocala National Forest), and rivers to kayak on (Suwanee, Santa Fe).

-The springs are fed from underground aquifers and are 72 degrees year round, regardless of the weather. Manatee viewing is best in the winter when these majestic creatures venture into the springs to warm up from the colder rivers.

-Grocery store options are Winn-Dixie in High Springs (20mins), Publix in Alachua or Lake City (30 mins), and many more options including Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Chun Ching, and Aldi in Gainesville (45 mins).

-The closest hospital is 30 mins away in Lake City but most people prefer Shands in Gainesville (50 mins)
